Telecommunication networks for the marine industry

ABB Finland’s Marine and Ports unit in Helsinki develops electrification and automation solutions for the marine industry. The unit’s spearhead product is the Azipod® electronic propulsion system, which contributes to the fuel efficiency, energy efficiency and driveability of cruise ships, icebreakers, ro-ro ships and tankers, among others.

The fuel savings are based on a smooth flow of water through the propellers. Thanks to the 360-degree rotating steering unit, a vessel using the Azipod propeller system has better manoeuvrability, is quieter and leaves more room inside the vessel. Thanks to the good manoeuvrability, safety is also significantly improved.

Mintly experts have been involved in designing and securing the telecommunication networks for the systems that ABB Marine supplies. The network needed to be available at all times, and testing had to be well-defined to meet the classification requirements of the marine industry. Our experts were involved with ABB’s project staff and main designers in both the office and shipyard from beginning to end.

These experts have decades of experience in building and operating secure, high-availability data networks, and like all Mintly experts, they are constantly working on the most demanding design tasks, leveraging their accumulated experience for the benefit of all our customers.
